5-Bit Programmable PWM

5-Bit Programmable PWM
A DS1050 5-bit programmable pulse width modulator (PWM) uses a combination of 2-wire processor addressability
N/Abit programmable pulse width modulator (PWM) uses a combination of 2-wire processor addressability, microamp power consumption, and packaging options to minimize power, space, and weight costs in battery-powered designs. The DS1050 generates a square wave output in standard frequencies of 1, 5, and 10 kHz, with a duty cycle variable from 0% to 100% in 3% steps. Processor control of a PWM over a 2-wire interface has two advantages: single-bus control and compatibility with other 2-wire devices and the ability to make cycle changes in software or on the fly.

Operating in the 2.5V to 5.5V range, the DS1050 typically consumes 50 mA at full operation and 1 mA in power-down mode. The DS1050 is the first PWM available in 8-pin DIP, 8-pin SOIC and 8-pin µSOP packaging, with die-scale or flip-chip packages available on request. It is suited for applications such as LCD contrast and/or brightness controls, switch-mode power supplies, heating controls, battery chargers, or motor controls where low size, cost and power matter. The DS1050 can also be used as a standalone oscillator. The DS1050 will be available mid-March 2000 at a cost of $0.99 in quantities of 1,000. Samples are available now.
