AMI Semiconductor, Inc. tworks are more flexible, easier to install, operate, maintain, and are simpler to reconfigure than traditional cable-tree architectures. An AS-i network carries data and power over two bus wires in a single distinctively yellow cable that connects a large number of slave units to a master programmable logic computer or simple industrial computer (m Controller). It can be used to create a network between almost any kind of sensor, actuator, master controller application, power control unit, accessory, and input/output (I/O) module used in a demanding industrial process control environment.

Using a mixed-signal design, EEPROM is integrated into the A2SI integrated circuit (IC), creating a high degree of flexibility and reprogrammability to meet the changing needs of modern production environments with little additional capital investment. The A2SI also contains an integrated watchdog that improves system integrity and reliability, and a feature that enables protection of factory- and product-dependent information (firmware).
