New IC's Enable UXGA Resolution In Digital And Flat Panel Displays
Silicon Image announced PanelLink chips that support display resolutions from VGA (800 × 600) up to UXGA (1600 × 1200) in a single link.
The SiI 160 and SiI 161 are the first implementation of the Digital Visual Interface (DVI) spec, which is being announced this week by the Digital Display Working Group (DDWG) at the Intel Developer's Forum. The DVI spec is based on Silicon Image's PanelLink Digital technology.
The market shift to the all-digital display was accelerated last year with Compaq's announcement of its Presario line of digital-ready computers. Compaq's computers and displays incorporated the PanelLink Digital interface. Shortly thereafter, Compaq, Dell, Fujitsu, H-P, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, NEC, and Silicon Image formed the DDWG to foster rapid adoption of digital displays. Then, nearly all add-in VGA card manufacturers agreed to design in PanelLink compatibility to enable all-digital display connectivity.
The PanelLink protocol has been adopted by the Digital Display Working Group, Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) for its "Plug and Display" standard and is the underlying technology of the Digital Flat-panel (DFP) standard.
