Overvoltage Protection Controller With Integrated Battery Disconnect Switch

Sunnyvale, CA -- Maxim Integrated Products introduced the MAX4880, MAX4881-MAX4884, overvoltage protection controllers that have an integrated battery disconnect switch with a current-limit range of 0.525A to 1.1A, depending on which part is used. Integration of the current-limit switch in a 3mm x 3mm TDFN package reduces both overall external system component count and necessary board space, making these devices applicable for such space-constrained applications as cell phones, digital still cameras, PDAs, and MP3 players. The MAX4880-MAX4884 provide overvoltage protection to +28V. Overvoltage trip levels range from +4.5V to +5.6V, and undervoltage trip levels range from +2.55V to +4.35V. Additional features include FLAG signals (overvoltage, overcurrent, battery voltage trip) and an internal charge pump. Also featured are thermal shutdown protection, 15kV ESD protection, and a built-in startup delay that allows the adapter voltage to settle down before turning on the external MOSFET. Furthermore, the MAX4880 can be configured as a low-cost battery charger.
These overvoltage protection controllers are specified to operate over the extended -40 degrees Celsius to +85 degrees Celsius temperature range. The MAX4880-MAX4884 are available in a 3mm x 3mm, 10-pin TDFN package.
