Sipex Adds Programmability to World's Quietest Electroluminescent Lamp Driver

Source: Sipex Corporation

Sipex Corporation, designer and manufacturer of high-performance analog semiconductors for the battery-powered, portable electronics market, today announced the immediate availability of its new SP4439 – the world's quietest, programmable electroluminescent (EL) lamp driver. The SP4439 provides the quietest and most flexible EL lamp driver solution for battery operated portable electronics such as cell phones, MP3 players, two way radios and other noise sensitive devices. Sipex's proprietary, programmable wave shaping technology uses two external resistors to set the rise and fall times of the output signal. By adjusting the slope of these two edges, users can optimize lamp brightness, as well as control acoustic noise and EMI for a wide range of lamp sizes without sacrificing efficiency.

"The availability of the new SP4439 extends the performance capabilities of our ultra-quiet EL lamp drivers for acoustic noise sensitive applications with larger lamp sizes," said Jack Olson, Manager of Sipex's Analog Display Product Line. "The SP4439 delivers a new level of flexibility into the hands of portable system designers. Now customers can optimize lamp brightness, efficiency, and acoustic noise – according to their own design priorities and application requirements. And, as with all Sipex EL lamp driver ICs, the Sipex EL technical support team is available to assist with design, optimization, prototyping and retrofits to minimize design time, design resources and time-to-market for our customers."

About the SP4439

The SP4439 is an ultra-quiet, programmable EL lamp driver specifically designed for use in alkaline and lithium ion battery-powered handheld devices such as cell phones, MP3 players, two way radios and other acoustically sensitive devices. The wave shaped, near sinusoidal, output drive signal minimizes acoustic noise and EMI. The programmable output rise and fall times allow designers to optimize the EL lamp solution for their specific applications. The SP4439 also delivers constant current through the lamp to minimize potential through coupling of EMI and extend the life of the lamp.

The SP4439 is packaged in a space-saving 10 lead MSSOP, operates from a +2.2V to +6.0V battery source over the temperature range, – 40 degrees C to +85 degrees C, and features a low-power standby mode that draws less than 1uA for prolonged battery life. All input pins are ESD protected with internal diodes to VDD and VSS.

Because EL lamp design involves multiple materials and electronics, Sipex makes its technical resources available to interested customers to provide assistance with design, optimization, prototype builds and/or retrofits.

About Sipex:

Sipex Corporation designs, manufactures and markets value-added, high-performance, analog integrated circuits using standard mixed-signal and dielectrically isolated BiCMOS wafer process technologies. The company is headquartered in Billerica, Massachusetts and has manufacturing facilities in Massachusetts and California.

The company markets over 750 products in three core product areas: power management, interface and analog displays. The power management product group includes low drop out linear regulators, DC to DC switching regulators and controllers, charge pumps, and microprocessor supervisors. The interface product group contains RS-232, RS-485 and high speed, differential transceivers, along with dual and multi-protocol transceivers. The analog display product group consists primarily of electroluminescent display drivers for backlighting small- to medium-sized LCD displays.
