Pulse has announced the first set of filter modules and hybrid transformers which meet the FSAN committee

Joint development with Infineon and Savan Communication

Pulse has announced the first set of filter modules and hybrid transformers which meet the FSAN committee recommendations for VDSL (Very high speed Digital Subscriber Line) broadband access. The solution was designed in partnership with Savan Communications, a leader in VDSL, and Infineon Technologies, a worldwide leader in semiconductors for xDSL technologies.

The new components, which are part numbered B4010 to B4018, encompass all of the magnetics required from the twisted pair connector to the Infineon/Savan VDSL Analog Front-end.

VDSL technology provides symmetric and asymmetric data rates, thereby enabling local and long-distance telephone companies to provide Broadband services such as business applications as well as video and high-speed on-line services, over existing copper lines. The joint Infineon/Savan VDSL chip-set and Pulse's set of filters will enable rates of up to 30Mbps.

"The frequency response of the Pulse filter module set has been optimized to exactly match the parameters of the Infineon VDSL Chipset, thus guaranteeing system performance" said Elaine Baxter, product manager at Pulse. "Coupled to excellent performance the solution is provided in high quality transfer-moulded packages which are ideal for automated surface mount assembly lines."

The devices include a POTS and ISDN splitter for VDSL, transmit and receive filters and an integrated hybrid and band pass filter. Two versions are available, one for 100 Ohm lines and one for 135 Ohm lines. This flexibility provides the optimal performance for different countries and applications.

"The technical expertise of Pulse in the design of the magnetics made it possible to provide a highly compact filter and hybrid transformer solution to work with our VDSL chip set," said Christian Wolff, vice president Business Unit Transceivers at Infineon Technologies. "The solution fits perfectly to our VDSL chip set, which is the highest integrated solution on the market today".

Pulse's solution is currently used in the analog front end portion of the Savan VDSL modem, which has been extensively field-tested by telecom operators and customers all over the world. Furthermore, it is integrated into Infineon's evaluation board which is used by leading system manufacturers to evaluate the Savan/Infineon VDSL chip-set.

Dr. Shimon Peleg, Chief Technical Officer at Savan Communications commented: "VDSL is considered to be the next generation xDSL technology. However, if you look at the small size of the Pulse VDSL ISDN/POTS splitter and consider VDSL's very low power consumption, you realize that VDSL seems to offer much more than just a next generation technology."

Details on the B4010 through B4018 products can be found on Pulse's data sheet B931.
