Virtio's Virtual Platform Technology coupled with Wind River VxWorks and Tornado delivers complete software development environment in software

CAMPBELL, CALIF., February 11, 2002---Virtio Corporation, the creator of virtual platforms today announced that it has joined Wind River Systems', Inc. (NASDAQ: WIND) WindLink™ Partner Program. Virtio's virtual prototyping technology enables software development engineers to boot operating systems and run software application programs without the need for physical hardware. With this technology, software development engineers can work with Wind River's VxWorks® operating system (OS) and the Tornado® integrated development environment (IDE) on Virtio Virtual Platforms. The first Virtio Virtual Platform supporting the Wind River IDE and OS is the MIPS Malta Virtual Platform and offers the developer a complete software development environment on their desktop PC for developing drivers, middleware and applications for the MIPS32 architecture. The Virtual Platform provides complete hardware and software visibility and binary compatibility with the real hardware so software can be developed and integrated with hardware concurrently.

Shay Ben-Chorin, president and CEO for Virtio stated, "Virtio's virtual prototyping technology enables embedded system developers to innovate software on software. Since software is a key differentiator for any embedded system, it's important that functional validation of that software on the targeted system be available early on to speed the delivery of the end product to the market."

"In addition, Virtio's virtual platforms proactively address the short product life cycles and compressed development schedules that have become the norm in today's embedded systems marketplace," continued Ben-Chorin. "With our products, embedded system developers don't have to wait for physical development boards that can be difficult to acquire and hard to use in the software development process. By joining Wind River's WindLink program, we can extend these benefits to the large number of embedded developers using Wind River software."

"Wind River is pleased to welcome Virtio as a WindLink™ partner and recognizes the value of having a virtual platform using Wind River's technology," said Caroline Yao, director of partner solutions at Wind River. "By working with leading partners such as Virtio, Wind River can ensure its customers have access to leading software technology that can significantly augment their overall embedded system development activities."

Virtio's Virtual Prototyping Platforms offer significant software development benefits by providing:
  • Accurate hardware behavior (binary compatible)
  • Complete control and visibility of both the hardware and software environments
  • Wide-spread access for continuous hardware/software integration
  • Easy electronic distribution of the software development environment to colleagues, partners and customers
  • Accurate model of the user interface
  • High performance that supports booting operating systems and running applications such as the VxWorks run-time environment and Tornado tools on the same PC workstation.
  • Integration with industry-standard software development tools
