Solution Targeted to Handset Makers Answers Demand for Fully Featured Phones and Speeds Time to Market

Issy-les-Moulineaux, France and Ra'anana, Israel -- Wavecom SA and Emblaze Semiconductor, an Emblaze Group company and a leading provider of mobile multimedia and application ICs, today announced a partnership to co-operate in the development of two fully featured multimedia mobile phone platforms, targeted to handset manufacturers.

Packaged as two different versions of Wavecom's Feature Phones Development Lab, the Wavecom/Emblaze Semiconductor platforms provide solutions for multimedia handsets requiring worldwide coverage, high-end software and support for advanced multimedia technologies. The platforms are developed to meet the growing demand for fully featured phones and to improve time to market for handset makers.

The first platform, Feature 700 for multimedia mobile phones, will be available in the first quarter of 2004 and is based on Wavecom's WISMO Pac P5186 GSM/GPRS module and the Emblaze Semiconductor ER4521 multimedia processor. Emblaze Semiconductor will support the following multimedia technology on the Feature 700 Development Lab:

  • Camera for still picture (VGA) and video record (QCIF 15fps)
  • Display: up to 176x220, up to 262k colors
  • Playback: MP3, MPEG 4 AAC, MPEG 4
  • Video Streaming
  • External memory support: MMC/SD, NAND Flash
  • Multi format melody support
  • Polyphonic ring tones: up to 64 chords support

Wavecom's WISMO Pac P5186 provides these key features:

  • Quad band (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) for worldwide coverage
  • Support for high-end feature software: WAP2.0, MMS, Java, E-mail, SyncML
  • Large number of peripherals supported: color display, camera
  • Connectivity: USB, storage card

The second platform, Feature 705, will be available in the 2nd half of 2004 and is based on the WISMO Pac P5186 and Emblaze ER4525 processor. The upgraded multimedia features of this platform include MPEG-4 video capture and playback at CIF resolution (15 fps), JVT video decoding, 1.3 Mpixel still image capture and enhanced graphics engine with VGA-size LCD support.
